Yesterday was seriously one of the best runs of my life - City2Sea. I was a little bit nervous about this run as I was worried that I wouldn't be able to make the distance, which was 14km. I actually had to go for a 14km run on the Thursday before the race to convince myself that I would be able to make the distance. When I woke up on Sunday I told myself that I could run 14km but the run probably wasn't going to be done in a good time. I was expecting around 1 hour 30 minutes.
Thankfully Melbourne was beautiful yesterday. When I got up in the morning there wasn't a cloud in the sky nor was there any breeze. Perfect running conditions!
The run began on St Kilda Road, right near The Arts Centre in Melbourne. We were all split up into several waves and I was in wave two. The race was supposed to begin at 8:05, but we didn't end up running until 8:15.
I started off the race really well. The first kilometre flew by so fast!! I kept an eye on my Polar GPS so that I could track my pace and I was really pleased as I was around the 5:30 min/km.
The rest of the race went really well too. I kept my mind busy whilst I was running. I listened to music, which was a mix of running songs that suited me. It had The Killers, Muse (the old stuff), Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Garbage, etc. The music really kept me pumped! I also focused on the people around me. Normally I don't pay any attention to anyone who runs past me, but this time I wanted to look at the different people who ran past to try and distract me. I ran past my doctor, a Lego man, a chicken, a lady in a muscle costume, a lady with fruit on her head, just to name a few. So many of them made me laugh, which was good. I also focused on each kilometre that I was running.
I also felt good during the run. When I was in kilometre 12 I started to get a little tired, mainly because the 1000 metres felt more like 2000 metres. It went forever.
But I was so excited when I saw the finish line and the sea! The sea smelt so good!!
And I ended up finishing the race in 1.18:42! For me, that is super fast, so I was so excited! When I did Run 4 The Kids in March this year, I ran 15km in about 1 hour and 30 minutes, so I have definitely improved.
After the run I caught up with some of my 12WBT friends - Raelene, Sharon, Alana and Darren. It was so awesome to catch up with them as it feels like I haven't seen them in ages! And guess what these crazy people were going to do after the 14km run? They were going to the Eureka Tower to climb 88 floors as part of the Eureka Climb!! Crazy!!!
And to top the day off, I went out for dinner with some of the 12WBT girls! It was lovely to catch up with them and chat.
I was so exhausted when I went to bed last night and for the first time in ages I actually fell asleep straight away!
